Air Race Tuesday!

This is your chance to fly an Air Race for yourself - no experience required!

On the second Tuesday of each month, Kemble Airport plays host to an Air Race!  This is where YOU get the opportunity to participate in an air race, competing against other novice pilots!

After a thorough briefing and a practise flight in the morning where you learn to fly the cutting edge Extra300 raceplane and fly tight corners, you will prepare for the big race itself.  To begin you dive down to low level at speeds in excess of 200mph, select 'smoke on' and storm across the start.  You will then need to pass through a series of simulated gates at high speed either with your wings exactly level, or at 90o - in 'knife-edge' flight!

No matter what your previous experience, YOU will fly the aeroplane, with an experienced aerobatic and ex-military instructor in the aeroplane with you to make sure that it is safe.  Your Air Race time is entirely dependent upon how accurately you fly the aeroplane, and how much 'g' you can stand as you pull through the turns!

The race is flown 750ft over the airfield with the instructor calling out the turns based on physical features on the ground; gates or pylons are simulated to ensure safety.  All instructors are former military pilots with substantial aerobatic instructional experience, and are officially approved display pilots in their own right.  All flights are carried out with the UK's leading Advanced Flight Safety training organisation.

Typical Profile of Your Day
9.30 Arrive and get kitted out in a genuine military flying suit.  Group flying and racing brief. This includes how to fly the aeroplane, how to make tight level turns, how to handle the 'G' forces. A draw is made for the competitor running order.
Practice Flight Practice flight in the Extra 300 aircraft (as used in Red Bull Air Racing), being taught how to fly - and how to race! Your flight finishes with a practice run over the course itself.
Lunch Snack Lunch with your pilot, a professional flying instructor, aerobatics and display pilot with many years of experience. Talk race tactics, how to make the aeroplane go faster, and run-through of the race rules and time penalties for errors.
Tension mounts as you await your turn for.....The Race Flight itself!
Race Flight The instructor sets the aeroplane up, then you dive from height to storm across the start line for your timed run! Flight time is approximately 15 minutes.
Results Once all of the competitors have flown, it's time for the results! Have YOU been the fastest on the day?! All competitors have their time placed on the season scoreboard in the Ultimate High crewroom.
End of day (approx 4.00pm) All competitors will be provided with a certificate signed by their pilot, showing their race results.
Opportunity to purchase a DVD of your flights.

Air Racing Background
The UK has an extremely strong Air Race heritage, with the legendary Spitfire a direct descendent of the Supermarine S6B, which won the famous Schneider Air Race trophy.

A handicapped Air Racing Series is still run by The Rally, Records and Racing Association, and the International series of Red Bull Air Races is now very well known.

Normally the thrills and excitement of Air Racing can only be enjoyed by massively experienced pilots.
