Bernie spent his first productive tour in the RAF on VIP transport flying the HS 748 around Europe; notable passengers included Harold Wilson, Dennis Healey and minor members of the Royal family. Much of his RAF career was spent flying the Chipmunk, Bulldog and Jet Provosts with a final flying tour as Officer Commanding Southampton University Air Squadron. The flying was interrupted by three ground appointments, with his final 3 years spent as a member of the MOD team responsible for introducing the PC9, Hawk and Tornado aircraft into the Saudi Air Force.
After retiring from the RAF he spent the next 20 years of his flying life transporting the "bucket and spade brigade" on their holiday flights with Britannia Airways (now Thomson Airways). His flying is now divided between Ultimate High and 3 Air Experience Flight at Colerne flying ATC and CCF cadets, continuing an association with introducing British youth to the exciting world of aviation. At other times you are likely to find him on top of a peak in the Lake District or Snowdonia!
