Whilst at University studying Aeronautics and Astronautics, Ian started flying the Bulldog and realised that there was far more fun to be had flying aeroplanes than designing them. On graduating he joined the RAF where he spent most of his time flying the Hercules in the low-level environment all around the world. He was also a display pilot and instructor for the Falcons Parachute Display Team. During his CFS tour as a Qualified Flying Instructor he was Flight Commander for the last Jet Provost Course before converting onto the Tucano. Ian was also the last RAF pilot to gain the A2 instructor category on the Jet Provost before its withdrawal from service and still flies the Jet Provost from Kemble.
On leaving the RAF, Ian worked for the UN in Pakistan and Afghanistan as the Senior Air Operations Officer. Being too far to commute to Kemble, he moved back to the UK where he is now an instructor and examiner on the L382, the civilian version of the Hercules, and his tasks include teaching low-level spraying of dispersants at 100ft for oil spills.
