Ultimate High pilot Nick Wakefield will be representing the UK, flying his Pitts Special aircraft at the World Aerobatic Games Championships in Poland in August.
Competing on the global stage requires not only exceptional flying skills, but also huge personal dedication by each pilot, including significant commitment of time, money and energy to mastering the sport.
"Aerobatics is not just about making shapes in the sky," commented Nick Buckenham, the British Aerobatic Association's Head of Contests and Chief Judge for the Unlimited European Aerobatic Championship. "It is about intellectual strength to make split second decisions in a stressful environment; it is about the physical demands of high G manoeuvring; it is about meticulous planning and execution of a sequence of figures that the pilot may have only seen for the first time a couple of hours before; and then the ability to string together those figures in the correct order in a small cube of air without making any mistakes. This is vitally important if you are to beat the best in the World."
